More kiwifruit and an earlier start to the new season are expected in New Zealand’s north-east region of Gisborne, according to local reports.
NZ Kiwifruit Growers representative Tim Tietjen told the Gisborne Herald that “fantastic” spring conditions favoured good pollination and larger fruit sizes.
“Our season is currently tracking seven to ten days ahead of average, with growers optimistic for an early harvest, starting with the ruby red kiwifruit in early March,” he said.
A number of large orchards that were planted around four years ago were now in full production, Tietjen added, which will mean the region produces more kiwifruit in 2025.
