Italy's Tomato Processing Volume Expected to Reach 5.8 Million Tons by 2025

Release time:2025-12-04 15:42
Italy's total tomato processing volume in 2025 is approximately 5.8 million tons, showing a slight increase compared to 2024 but still about 10% below the planned target.
Italy remains the world's second-largest tomato processing country (after the U.S. and ahead of China). China, after experiencing explosive growth in previous years, has significantly reduced production due to difficulties in maintaining its foreign market share.
Italy accounts for 14.4% of global processed tomato production and 53.8% of Europe's processed volume.
Italy continues to be the top producer and exporter of tomato-based consumer products (finished goods).
Export Performance:
Full-year 2024 exports increased by 6.5% in volume and 3.8% in value, showing positive performance.
In the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024: export volume decreased by 3.6%, and export value dropped by 10.7%, almost certainly due to uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariffs (before 2024, U.S. import duties ranged between 6%-12% depending on product specifications, but were uniformly raised to 15% starting in 2025).
Europe (particularly Germany) remains the largest market, followed by the U.K., the U.S., Japan, and Australia.
Domestic Consumption:
In the first half of 2025, retail channel consumption was largely stagnant, with volume down 0.4% and value down 0.5%.
The most significant declines were seen in diced tomatoes and whole peeled tomatoes.
Tomato sauce remains the best-selling single product, accounting for 63.4% of the tomato product market, followed by diced tomatoes (20.4%), whole peeled tomatoes (10.9%), cherry tomatoes (3.8%), and tomato paste (1.7%).
The foodservice sector (out-of-home consumption) remained stable, accounting for 67% of Italy's total tomato product consumption (approximately 2.1 million tons).
